Figurative Language

1. Simile- describing something by saying it is similar to something else, using the words "like" or "as"
Ex: She was a very frail girl who looked as if she had been lost in the rain for years and the rain had washed the blue from her eyes and the red from her mouth and the yellow from her hair.

2. Metaphor- describing something by saying it IS something else
Ex: Children are carpets, they should be stepped on occasionally.

3. Idiom- an expression that doesn't mean what it says, and you can't figure out its meaning, you just have to know
Ex: The old cow kicked the bucket last night and was buried in the morning.

4. Analogy- pointing out multiple parallels between two things
Ex: Bird is to nest as person is to house.
